South
East Eventers League News
Shades of 2007
in South East Eventers League after Tweseldown 1
Some of last year’s front runners emerged from the field
at Tweseldown 1 near Aldershot, Hants, to hot up the early
2008 South East Eventers League rankings [SEEL] (
www.south-east-eventers-league.co.uk).
Golden Cross E.C rider Sam Penn made a strong challenge for
the Devoucoux overall title last year with Slice of Pie Syndicate’s
On A Par finishing 6th. Although a showjump down cost them
an intermediate win on Saturday, they now head the main SEEL
ranking, the WOW Leading Horse & Riders by 1 pt from last
year’s runners-up Lisa Pilbeam & Cullawn Celtic Queen
(‘Lady’).
However with the Overall SEEL winner receiving a WOW Competitor
saddle, the performance saddle from First Thought Equine Ltd
(www.wowsaddles.com),
Sam will no doubt face a major challenge as the season progresses.
4 combinations are ranked 3rd = just two points behind, including
last year’s Overall winners Kristina Cook & Miners Frolic.
Sam & On A Par run at Somerley Park International (25th
March) and at South of England 1 (5th April) – as do Lisa
and ‘Lady’.
Lisa & Lady continue to head the Team Opposition Mares
and are the leaders of the second main SEEL title the Kan
Teq Owner-Riders ranking, just a point ahead of Sam Griffiths
and Showtime Mr Pete. Kan Teq recently launched a revolutionary
new body protector for women with a specially designed moulded
foam panel protection system which is truly unique: it is
both strong and light (www.kanteq.com).
Francis Whittington opens the leaders account in the new Seahorse
Intermediates after a 3rd on The Meantime Syndicate’s Meantime
Liatos.
Caroline Baker on Miss Watership and Anna Tomson on Master
Floub jointly lead the Equiguest Novices while Minnie Kemp
on Marlfield Duke and Harry Dzenis on Rockin Robin head the
Lodge Farm Cross Country Course Under 21 Riders.
With a 2nd at Stilemans and a 5th at Tweseldown, Anna Sharples
and Tally It Up are just one point ahead of Jonathan Ford
& Bounce Along in the WOW Leading Overall Grassroots Rider,
in which the winner wins a WOW Club saddle. Anna and Jonathan
are also 1st and 2nd in the Localrider Grassroots Pre-Novices.
In the other rankings sponsored by Localrider Magazine, Katharine
Morris still heads the Best First Timers on Puff Daddy while
the Intros have their first outing next weekend at Munstead
(21-22 March) near Godalming, Surrey.
Jonathan Ford and Bounce Along are one of the four joint
leaders of the Alessandro Albanese Leading Six-Year-Olds rankings
sponsored by tailor-made luxury Italian designer brand www.alessandroalbanese.com.
The others include Pippa Funnell on Jane & Jonathan Clarke’s
Billy Landretti, who won at Stilemans. Pippa also heads the
Racehorse Sanctuary Racehorse-to-Eventers with Ensign but
sadly she had to withdraw her novice rides at Tweseldown after
the death of her father George Nolan.
Our condolences to Pippa, her mother Jenny and brother
Tim. George was one of the stalwarts of the sport
in the South East as a commentator and helping organise a
number of events with Jenny. He was a very good friend to
SEEL and had been the Master of Ceremonies at many Awards
Presentations at the Seahorse Ball. George will live on in
our thoughts.

Season Update
Despite
the wind which caused havoc to the showground Friday night,
the 2008 South East Eventers League got underway at Stilemans
Stud near Godalming and the first front runners emerged.
Heading the leaderboard are GB team stalwart Pippa Funnell
on Jane & Jonathan Clarke’s six-year-old Billy Landretti
and West Sussex rider Ken Spencer on Susan Lajtha’s Nine Chimes
who now jointly head the main SEEL ranking, the WOW Leading
Horse & Riders. Both riders have a chance this weekend
to extend their lead when they compete at the next SEEL event,
Tweseldown near Aldershot in Hants. Pippa and Ken each have
eight other horses entered in sections ranging from pre-novice
up to Open Intermediate.
The Overall SEEL winner will receive a WOW Competitor saddle,
the performance saddle from First Thought Equine Ltd (www.wowsaddles.com),
which is totally modular so by buying different components
you can alter all of its characteristics to suit different
horses, riders and disciplines.
First Thought Equine are also sponsoring the WOW Leading
Overall Grassroots Rider in which the overall winner across
Intro and Pre-Novice wins a WOW Club saddle, available in
Dressage, Jumping and GP designs. The current leader is Kent
rider Sophie Miles on her own seven-year-old Woodlands Anabel
and their pre-novice win also gives them top spot in the Localrider
magazine Grassroots Pre-Novices.
In the other rankings sponsored by Localrider Magazine,
West Sussex rider Katharine Morris heads the Best First Timers
on her 13-year-old Puff Daddy while the Intros have their
first outing at Tweseldown.
Pippa Funnell also heads the new Alessandro Albanese Leading
Six-Year-Olds rankings in which the winner will receive a
made-to-measure jacket from this tailor-made luxury Italian
designer brand (www.alessandroalbanese.com).
Junior rider Minnie Kemp (Hants) who was 2nd behind Pippa
in a novice on her 12-year-old gelding Marlfield Duke heads
two of the eleven SEEL rankings – a showjump down narrowly
costing her the win.
She now heads the second major SEEL ranking the Owner-Riders
kindly sponsored by Kan Teq who make innovative body protectors
(www.kanteq.com) and the Lodge Farm Cross Country Course Under
21 Riders and is also 3rd= in the WOW Leading Horse &
Riders.
Jo Fisher (Hants) leads the Equiguest Novices on her 12-year-old
Whiskey and Ice while the Team Opposition Mares is headed
by 2007 winner nine-year-old Cullawn Celtic Queen owner and
ridden by Lisa Pilbeam.
The eleven 2008 SEEL rankings , which cover 26 events, range
from Intro to Overall, and over £10,000 worth of prizes, and
aim to reward the endeavours of the successful SE contenders.
The other rankings include the Racehorse Sanctuary Racehorse-to-Eventers
and a revived version of the popular Intermediate ranking
will be launched at this weekend’s SEEL event at Tweseldown
near Aldershot, which features sections from Intro to Open
Intermediate and attracts many of the sports top riders.
Founded
in 1995, the South East Eventers League is the UK's oldest
regional eventing league. They are looking forward to the
2008 season and are very grateful for the continued support
of their generous sponsors.
Good luck to all you
contenders setting your sights on a prize-winning season.
