Zara Phillips withdrawn from Olympic Eventing Team

Following an injury sustained during training, Toytown ridden by Zara Phillips has been withdrawn from Team GB for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

A reserve rider and horse combination will now be selected by the British Olympic Association, after nomination from the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), to replace Zara Phillips and will be announced as soon as possible.

Zara Phillips commented:

“I am very disappointed not to have the opportunity to ride at the Olympic Games and feel that Toytown deserved his chance to go. However, with horses these things happen and we still have a very strong team, I wish them every success.”

Simon Clegg, Team GB 2008 Chef de Mission said:

“This must be a huge disappointment to Zara particularly following the pair’s success over the last few years. Naturally we now need to focus our full support on the rest of the team including Zara’s replacement and give them every opportunity of competing to their full in Hong Kong.”

Will Connell, Team Leader for the Equestrian Team commented:

“The British team are saddened by the news, especially for Zara and her team. We have a strong team of reserves and the team are now focused on trying to win medals.”

OLYMPIC CONTENDERS HEAD TO YORKSHIRE’S BRAMHAM

There is much to celebrate at Bramham International Horse Trials, 5 - 8 June, this year. Not only is it the Event’s 35th birthday, but there is a truly world-class entry in the two CCI*** sections of just over 100 horses from six nations in this important Olympic year. Riders who already have that prized selection will compete against some under the watchful eye of their National selecto rs for a coveted place as well as some of Britain’s best riders and up-and-coming horses. Four of Britain’s Olympic quintet - William Fox-Pitt, Sharon Hunt, Mary King and Lucy Wiegersma - have horses entered as well as China’s sole representative in Hong Kong - Alex Hua Tian.

William Fox-Pitt, Bramham champion on no less than four occasions, brings two horses, Navigator and Kaleidoscope and Mary King, a Bramham winner in 1986, has her home-bred sisters Kings Fancy and Kings Temptress entered. Sharon Hunt and Lucy Wiegersma have one horse each in Charmed and Beckli respectively. Olympic reserve rider Oliver Townend will be out to make sure his name is top of the list with a good performance from Flint Curtis - winner of the FEI World Cup Qualifier TM at Chatsworth just a few weeks ago plus he brings two other challengers in Golden Hue and Divine Inspiration. Cumbrian rider Ruth Edge, also in the Olympic reserve pool, also has three horses for Bramham - Mayhem II, Fast Track and Mr Dumbledore and local rider, Nicola Wilson, a regular Bramham rider, brings Master Banks.
Olympic selections rests on a good performance by New Zealand.

Eventing Pony Theodore O'Connor Dies

Karen O'Connor's eventing pony Theodore O'Connor has died after an accident at Karen and David's farm.

The 13 year old pony broke free from his handlers whilst away from the barn and was found with a severed hind tendon and other injuries and was euthanised. A statement released from Karen O'Connor says, "Teddy got frightened and bolted. He slipped running back to the barn and suffered a severe laceration to his hind leg, severing the tendons and ligaments. Dr. Kent Allen was on the scene immediately, and it was determined after examination that the injuries were catastrophic."

Named 2007 USEF/Farnam Horse of the year after winning individual and team gold medals at the Pan Am Games with Karen last July, the Shetland/Arabian/Thoroughbred cross also finished third at the Rolex Kentucky CCI****.

"The more I rode him, the more I realized he's a real class horse," Karen O'Connor told EQUUS magazine in a feature about Teddy published in January 2008. Finishing sixth at this year's Kentucky, they were named on the eventing short list for the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong.

Mark Todd and Gandalf successfully qualified for the 2008 Hong Kong Olympics this weekend at Saumur in France. Needing just to complete a CCI *** Mark eventually came sixth. Gandalf was placed 25th after dressage - a phase Mark says that needs time to develop. Mark then rose up 13 places on the cross country after adding 16.4 cross country time penalties. A clear show jumping round with just one time fault on the final day moved them up another 7 places. The three time Badminton and five time Burghley winner Mark Todd - with Gandalf, a horse he bought at the end of January, are now qualified for the Olympic games, and with confirmation of a team place from the selectors almost guaranteed, Mark is on his way to attempt yet another Olympic medal.

Phillips & Stark join Festival team

The Gatcombe Festival of British Eventing recently announced the appointments of Peter Phillips and Ian Stark, OBE to the organisational team.

Peter Phillips joins his father, course designer and honourable organiser Captain Mark Phillips, in the role of joint organiser. Peter (31) has been involved with the horse trials at Gatcombe Park since a child and for the last 15 years has served out his ‘apprenticeship’ as a key member of Gatcombe’s ‘menial task division’, a group of people who, as the name suggests, perform fundamental but vital jobs such as stringing the course, setting out the main arena and preparing take-offs and landings.

Latest on Darren Chiacchia

Athens Olympian Darren Chiacchia remains in a serious condition after suffering a terrible fall at this month's Red Hill (Tallahassee) horse trials. Competing in a national preliminary class on the seven year old Baron Verdi, a misstep led them to a somersault of horse and rider. Darren sustained a severe head injury, and also contusions to both lungs with multiple rib fractures and a partially collapsed lung. Extensive specialized testing ruled out a spinal injury, with the major concern being the severe head injury.

FTSE - British Olympic Assoc Partnership Initiative

The British Equestrian Federation and The John Lewis Partnership are delighted to announce their partnership as part of the FTSE – British Olympic Association (BOA) Initiative.

The partnership brings together two highly successful organisations to share and transfer complementary skills.

Projects will vary over time, and the initial focus will be on IT and database development. It is hoped that the John Lewis Partnership will be able to assist with the consolidation of a variety of databases the British Equestrian Federation is currently developing. This would include the National Equine Database, World Class Equine & Athlete Database and a National Facilities database.

Andrew Finding, Chief Executive of the British Equestrian Federation comments, “The John Lewis Partnership is an ambitious, successful and forward thinking organisation powered by its people who are viewed as partners and owners of their business. This strongly reflects our own organisation and equestrian sport as a whole. We are looking forward to developing a strong relationship and working towards continued future success together.”
The John Lewis Partnership is excited by the partnership with the British Equestrian Federation because of their world class ability and medal winning record.

Charlie Mayfield, Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership said:

“Both the John Lewis Partnership and the British Equestrian Federation are thriving organisations characterised by a strong team culture, an enterprising spirit and a will to succeed by working together. I am struck by the medal-winning success of the BEF and believe that we have much to learn from each other. I look forward to forging a long-term partnership with the BEF which brings benefits to both organisations.”

Equestrianism is one of Great Britain’s top five Olympic and Paralympic sports, in 2007 alone Great Britain won 35 medals on the international stage. On a local level millions of people are involved with horses, riding is an extremely popular and healthy activity and the equestrian industry continues to grow as a multi-million pound business.

The British Equestrian Federation brings together a wide range of sporting bodies and organisations which encompasses much more than just the Olympic sports of Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping and the Paralympic sport of Para-Equestrian Dressage. As such the Federation represents, supports and leads equestrianism, from the local level to the international arena.

FEI Appoints New Secretary General

The President of the Fédération Equestre Internationale, HRH Princess Haya, has today announced the appointment of Alex McLin to the position of Secretary General, effective immediately. The appointment follows an extensive consultation period, with the National Federations, and the interviewing of a number of external candidates. Mr. McLin, who joined the FEI in March 2005, is currently the General Counsel & Deputy Secretary General of the FEI and has been Acting Secretary General since September 2007.

Educated at Duke University, a member of the New York Bar and having previously worked for the World Economic Forum, Mr McLin (37) is highly experienced in sports law, governance and management.

HRH Princess Haya said, “Alex McLin has shown that he is an excellent leader who has a profound understanding of the need to deliver the plans for horsesport in an expedient and apolitical fashion.

The mixture of youth and wisdom that is found in Alex McLin heralds a new era for the role of Secretary General and reflects the changing trend in sport away from the era of colourful sports administrators. As in business, sport is discovering that skill and creative delivery are powerful allies whose effect can be equally well delivered by a quiet approach.”

Toddy is Back

Not only described as the most successful event rider of all time, Mark Todd has been described by many as one of the most successful athletes of all time. A statement hard to disagree with when you consider how many sports stars manage to stay at the very top of their sport for 20 years.
